It’s estimated that one man in 10 has a problem related to having sex. Dr John Tomlinson of The Sexual Advice Association explains some of the causes, and where to seek help.
Sexual dysfunction in a man is when he's not able to perform properly,
says Dr Tomlinson. The main problem is being unable to get an erection.
It’s much more common than people realise. In the 20-40 age group it affects around 7-8% of men, in the 40-50 age group it affects 11%. In the over-60s it affects 40%, and more than half of men over 70.

Diagnosing Erectile Dysfunction
Before diagnosing erectile dysfunction (ED), your GP will ask you about your symptoms, your overall physical and mental health, your alcohol consumption, whether you take drugs, and whether you are currently taking any medication. Your GP will also want to know whether your ED is permanent, or only occurs when you are attempting to have sex with your partner.

Treating Erectile Dysfunction
If you have erectile dysfunction (ED), the treatment that you will receive will depend on the underlying cause of the condition. If ED is due to an underlying health condition, such as heart disease, or diabetes, that condition may need to be treated first before treatment for ED can begin. However, in some cases, treating the underlying cause will also resolve the problem of ED.
The main treatment options for ED are outlined below.
